Ethernet Failing 12 Years, 7 Months ago
|
|
Hi Hasan,
I used your tutorials to install Oracle and have been using now for about a year but recently I have been unable to make an ethernet connection from the VM machine to the host.
I have tried to restart it with ifconfig/up eth0 but it always fails. I have tried from the command line and the GUI but both fail.
I have been unable to get this working for the last few months. Any tips you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks
Luke

1)
First check if the IP has changed for your linux machine (use ifconfig command).
If possible put the original IP back using the static IP method as oppose to dynamic in linux network configuration.
2)
Turn off your VM. Change the Mac address of your VM (pick a new one randomly. I would modify last few characters). Restart VM. Linux will detect a new MAC address and will try to reset its settings.
See if the above two actions solve the problem.
Otherwise we need to dig into this further. Post the error message that you are getting.

Looks like this error is related to the defect in RHEL 4.
This problem only appears under certain conditions when you setup linux to obtain ip dynamically.
How about you change your ip settings to static. This should fix the problem.

Hi Hasan,
I did not realise the image uploaded. I meant to add that I was not sure how to change the MAC address so I just tried changing the address in the VMXF file.
How do I know what IP address to set statically?
Thanks
Luke

If your router's IP is 192.168.1.1 then dedicate any static IP in the format 192.168.1.x to your VM machine e.g. 192.168.1.50.

Hi Hasan,
I have tried setting the static IP address and the ethernet is active but I cannot access the linux server from the host machine.
Thanks

I understand that you cannot access Linux server from Windows host but
can you access internet from Linux?
Did you try changing the Mac address of your VM? This will force linux to reconfigure eth0.
