Question on the Static IP address 11 Years, 11 Months ago
Hi Hassan

I have configured the static IP address based on the router from my home. I use the same laptop for work too. The routers ip address is different there. When at work will this be a problem? Or should I add another static address when at work?

Would you be using your virtual machine at work as well?
Chances are that the gateway (router) IP would be different than home and work. For example at home the router could be 192.168.1.1 and at work it could be 192.168.10.1.
It would be too difficult to change the settings of your network again and again.
How about you go with Host-Only networking as oppose to Bridge. This way your virtual machine will get its IP from the virtual router inside your host laptop rather than external router.

Yes I would be using the Virtual Machine at work. I can go with Host-Only networking. Can I do that now that I have Linux installed and configured? If so do I still follow the same process of first selecting Host-only and then doing the ifConfig process and then editing the eth0 to enter the gateway ip address?

Yes you can change virtual machine's network configuration any time. You must turn off the machine first. Change the network to Host-Only. Turn on the machine. Go to network settings for Linux. First change the network setting to DHCP so that you get some ip address (it will no longer be 192.168.x.1). Then make this ip address static. Follow the videos to do all these steps. You dont have to recreate the machine.
